Water Conservation

Why is water conservation so important?
Clean, fresh water is a limited resource. The limited supply of freshwater along with the rising amount of severe droughts happening in the world is placing water as one of our most precious resources. Water is a necessity for the survival of all people. While almost 70% of the Earth is made up of water, many parts of the world suffer from clean water shortage.

Conserving water is important because it keeps water pure and clean while also protecting the environment. Conserving water means using our water supply wisely and being responsible. The following are ways to conserve water. While seemingly insignificant alone, with large populations practicing water conservation, we can be highly effective in water conservation. Every drop counts!

Ways to conserve water:

At home:
One of the simplest ways to conserve water is to be aware of water use at home. Many communities are already enforcing water regulations. There are a few simple things we can do at home to ease the burden on the local water supply and also save money in the process.

  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Only run the washing    machine and dishwasher when you have a full load.
  • Use a low flow shower head and faucet aerators.
  • Fix leaks.
  • Install a dual flush or low flow toilet or put a conversion kit on your existing toilet.
  • Monitor your water usage on your water bill and ask your local government about a home water audit.

Outdoors:
Besides water conservation at home, we can also save our water use outside in the environment. This means taking care of our plants and other vegetation without the overuse of water. The following are manageable ways to conserve water outdoors.

  • Plant drought-resistant trees and plants or native shrubs and groundcovers rather than grass in your landscaping.
  • Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants to slow evaporation of moisture.
  • Don’t overwater your lawn or water during peak periods.
  • Install rain sensors on irrigation systems.
  • Allow your lawn to go dormant for a few months in the summer.
  • Collect rainwater from your roof in rain barrels and reuse it to water your garden.

Practicing these water conservation techniques can be highly effective in keeping our water supply safe and pure to protect fresh water for the generations to come.
